You sure chat alot of crap Assassin. All ifs and buts with you, if Ali was 28 he would have owned Holmes, but he wasn't and lost and for the record in my opinion prime Calzaghe in Wales/England would have destroyed even a prime Hopkins, but bottom line is the FACT is Calzaghe won in 2008 and rightly so.
The only thing Bernard "The Executioner" Hopkins executed was his reputation for his pathetic racist comments before the fight.
Hate it or love it Calzaghe is a modern great and does have the respect from all respected American and world journalists who actually know what they are talking about. I won't be respondeding anymore I have said what I have to say and there is no point having a discussion with someone who speaks from the heartrather than his head.

Dark D, how can Calzaghe destroy a prime Hopkins when he can't destroy this version of Hopkins ? Would being in england help him somehow ?
Anyway, Im not saying he is bad, just that he aint all what he is made up to be. Had he beaten Toney, RJJ, Eubank, Hopkins, Mike McCalumn, just one or more of these names when they were top, he would have been considered great. But now sadly Mikkel Kessler and Lacey are one of the better names on his record. Maybe the best opponent he has ever faced is the 43 year old over the hill Hopkins who he wasnt able to hurt at all and who almost beat him.
I know u brits are very proud of him and u should be, but he is not the new Hagler. Again I'm not saying he aint that good, but he hasnt got the record to back it up.
Also must agree with African, he shouldnt get so many points for his arm punches.

Boxer not Fighter.
As for the rest well I simply don't care, the better (least boring) man won on the night, end of story.

Sorry I meant to say a prime Calzaghe vs a prime Hopkins. Calzaghe in his prime was a machine.

I can see your point Mikkel, but it's easy to say that with heinsight. Before the fights with Lacy (deemed new Tyson), Kessler(had two titles) and Hopkins (Legend) people were saying how great they are then when Calzaghe wins convincingly ,they are seen as average opponents. You can also only beat everbody in your era, it's been well documented that early in Calzaghe's reign alot of top boxers ducked him. Holmes also had a so called "weak era" and he too struggled toi get the respect he deserved, but 20 years later with this weak heavyweight division he nowlooks great, maybe in 20 years Calzaghe willbe appreciated more.
One last thing, no one is comparing Calzaghe to Hagler or Toney, but at the same time Calzaghe is a legend and his achievements are amazing.

Yeah he is pretty good I don't think his style is very pretty to look at but that's a matter of taste I guess. I still think that he is prime, he is one of those fighters coming into their real prime around 36 (like Lennox Lewis).
I don't think Kessler was ever considered "great", I mean in the same way as example Mayweather, Cotto are.
I'd really like to see Pavlik-Calzaghe, though it prob wouldnt happen.
If he beats Pavlik I'd start putting in him in the same league as Mayweather/Cotto but before that he is just a step below.
What he really needs is a key W against someone considered amazing like himself, the wins against Lacey and Kessler are not of that category.
Problem right now of course is to find someone like that.

First off, Oscar wasn't washed up, he was just undersized and couldn't deal with Bernard's strength. As for Tito, I lol'd. Tito was far from washed up at that point, he still was undefeated and believe was still in his 20s. Dont post joke posts like that. Tito was the biggest thing out when B-Hop raped him. B-Hop lost this one but it certainly doesnt make Calzaghe a great fighter, I have the same opinion before the fight as after. B-Hop should retire anywho, hes pretty old, maybe Calzaghe can walk into a joke fight with a slow RJJ to convince people hes a fighter with some type of legacy in the States.
EDIT: He was 40-0 at 28 years old. Shut up please. kthxbai

I saw you was thelast person to post before I read it and predictably you say exactly what I expected, another "pro America" boxing fan.
Tito was washed up, he was at the end of his prime (you dont't have to be 40 to have lost your egde) and like Oscar lost because he moved up a division too far and lost to a bigger man, hell Tito was hitting both Jones are Hopkins with bombs but to no affect, so Hopkins beat two guys because of a weight advantage and lost to Taylor and Jones while in their prime...wow, if I also remember rightly Hopkins was also accused of having a padded 20 title defence record like Calzaghe, but now he has bullied two hasbeen lightweights to get a win and of course being American that's all forgotten?.

Dark destroyer you are really bias and a "pro Euro" boxing fan. Tito was a monster middleweight when he faught Hopkins and destroyed a big middleweight William joppy by brutal KO months before he got his ass handed to him by hopkins. I'll admit as of now Hopkins 43 and Calzaghe 36 are by far the two best light heavyweights in the world, and their fight could have gone anyway depending on if u count slaps as power punches. Be that as it may at this point both of these fighters can beat Roy jones a man who was already brutally ktfo by tarver and glenn johnson hopkins was the only person to demolish and knockout glenn johnson and we all saw what he did to tarver in his 40's while roy was killed by these 2 in his early 30's.
Even when Joe beats Roy, and he will easilly beat roy he won't get any credit since he fights the great boxers when they are old and finished.

Nigel's post is so filled with nationalism and bullshit it's not even worth responding to. It's a joke really, just because you have some idea that your country is superior in boxing you lowball great fighters that Calzaghe wishes he could be. I'd be hard pressed to find someone who would even mention Ricky Hatton's name in the same sentence as Tito or Oscar and obviously Floyd who outclassed him , or Calzaghe to Hopkins or RJJ in the long run. RJJ will maybe lose now but if Calzaghe wouldn't have been worried about padding so much he could've gotten his ass kicked to RJJ while he was still at Super Middle. And I like Bernard Hopkins because he is from Philly, not because he's American, and RJJ and Mayweather are favorites because they are exciting to watch. Or at least Jones used to be.
EDIT: And I fail to see how moving up 10 pounds (career) and in that case 3 pounds from the time of the vargas fight, then actually dropping a pound from KOing Joppy made him lose every once of power he had.

Well to tell the truth Tito and Oscar don't account for all that much, hopkins has always been a huge ass middleweight who's body was probably more suited for 168 or 175, while oscar and tito were little welters moving up.
With that said, make the fight a few years back and hopkins would have beat joe. It's a given, if Joe struggled like hell with this old version, he wouldn't win against a younger, better version of hopkins. I mean if you think otherwise, you aren't thinking objectively at all.
Prime for prime, Joe loses to Hopkins.

This isn't about country vs country, I actually admire many American boxers infact Holyfield is my all time favorite, I just don't rate Bernard "The Racist" hopkins all that much. As for RJJ in his prime he would have beaten Calzaghe, so see I'm not pro Euro like you are pro USA, I'm just Anti Hopkins.
Like I have said before Calzaghe has beaten Hopkins and is still undefeated, so whine about him all you want, he is regarded as a legend just like Hopkins and your pro USA opinion fortunately doesn't count for anything in the boxing world.

This was and is a great topic, Hindsite is the only way you rank fighters on the all time list. At the time many seem great for example Prince Naseem, but if everybody would just ask themselves who/what fighters will be still talked about as being great 10 yrs from now?
The answer to the question of whether or not someone is great is pretty easy to answer.

Fair comment, pretty damn good for a fourty three year old to be still fighting and not only fighting but championship fights but yes I think they are both boring also but that's the way I feel when I watch most matches no matter who it is.
Lets hope some good matches come around in the HW division when the Haymaker goes up or has he gone up already ?
